Satish Tamboli
Interim Director, Mtech Ventures

Satish Tamboli is the Interim Director of Mtech Ventures and the Technology Advancement Program.  He has served as Mentor to UMD and UVA teams participating in the NSF I-Corps program.

Previously, Satish was the Founder and Principal of US-Asia Ventures (USAV) -  a Technology advisory firm to International Private Equity Funds, Venture Capital firms, and global enterprises.  Founded in 2004, USAV served clients like JP Morgan Real Assets Fund (Asia) and Tata Capital to source, evaluate, and close investment opportunities in Asia and the US.

Satish was Director of Telecom, Media, and Technology (TMT) investments for the AIG Asian Infrastructure Funds I & II managed by Emerging Markets Partnerships (EMP Global) – a private equity group with over $6 billion in committed capital from financial institutions including AIG, GE Capital, and Govt. of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC). He was responsible for investing over $500 million across a dozen mobile, broadband, and internet service providers in Asia.  He represented the AIG Funds on the Board of BPL Communications (acquired by Vodaphone) and Spice Telecom (Acquired by the Tata Group). He has also been an angel investor at several start-ups in Silicon Valley as well as in Asia.

Prior to this, Satish worked at INTELSAT (International Satellite Communications Organization) - the largest provider of global satellite communications services.  He co-led the design and global deployment of their Satellite Switched TDMA Network, managed R&D programs for broadband technologies and presented quarterly strategic plans to the Board.  Previously, he was a Product Engineer at Texas Instruments, Houston, where he managed a MOS front-end fabrication line for static memories.

Satish has an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering, Operations Research, from Stanford University. B.S. in Electrical Engineering (with distinction) from George Washington University. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Edmund is Director of the VentureAccelerator program at the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), where he helps to create new ventures based on technology developed at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also Director of the DC I-Corps program and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, technology entrepreneur, and angel investor. His primary business experience includes product development and management, sales and marketing, and entrepreneurship. He serves as an advisor and Board Member for several technology start-ups, and frequently serves as a mentor and coach for several domestic and international business accelerator programs.

Akbar Dawood

As Mtech Venture Analyst, Akbar Dawood provides advisory, analytical and evaluative support for the TAP venture incubator, the University of Maryland Technology Start-Up Boot Camp, the University of Maryland Business Plan Competition, the Impact Pre-Seed Fund and faculty and students launching technology-based ventures. Akbar is directly involved in the day-to-day management, decision making and fundraising activities of VentureAccelerator portfolio companies, as well as the sourcing and vetting of portfolio companies. In addition, Akbar is Director of the Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund and is active with regional nonprofits.

Before joining Mtech, Akbar held investment banking and trading roles. Most recently, at Credit Suisse, Akbar was part of the Credit Derivatives Portfolio Management desk, where he helped hedge the firm’s $55 billion leveraged loan portfolio in North America. Akbar conducted fundamental credit research and evaluated industry trends and market conditions to create credit opinions and produce relative value recommendations for portfolio positions in the bank loan secondary markets and CDS markets.

Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Akbar was a Senior Investment Banking Analyst at Banc of America Securities in the Leveraged Finance group, where he executed leveraged acquisitions, debt recapitalizations, stockholder dividends, and strategic re-pricings, as well as an IPO.

Akbar graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Economics and Markets & Management, where he was also International Association and International Council Treasurer and a member of the Duke Investment Club, a student-run shareholder club.
